PFAS-Free sealing: advancing performance with responsibility
highlights
- 100% PFAS-free sealing solution for hard anodized coatings
- enhanced performance: improved sliding, hydrophobic, corrosion and chemical resistance
- future-ready approach aligned with evolving environmental regulations
At Aalberts surface technologies, progress is driven by a clear ambition: to enhance performance while reducing environmental impact. With increasing scrutiny around per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), our teams are proactively reviewing processes and developing sustainable alternatives.
For hard anodized coatings such as HART-COAT®, HART-COAT®-GL, NUCOTEC® and NUCOCOMP®, sealing plays a key role in achieving specific functional properties. Traditionally, this step could involve substances potentially affected by upcoming PFAS regulations. Instead of waiting, we developed a future-ready solution.
The result is a PFAS-free sealing technology based on an organic polymer with inorganic silane groups. Applied through a transparent dipping process, it forms a highly adhesive layer that integrates seamlessly with the coating.
This innovation not only eliminates PFAS, it enhances performance. The new sealing improves sliding behavior by reducing friction, increases hydrophobic properties, and further strengthens corrosion and chemical resistance. It builds on the already strong performance of our base layers and extends their durability in demanding environments. As Dr.-Ing. Georg Andersohn, Research & Development Manager, explains: “The new sealant strengthens the core properties of our coatings while supporting our commitment to more sustainable solutions.” Beyond hard anodized layers, the technology also offers potential for other metallic materials and sub-layers, opening new application possibilities. With this development, we are taking a proactive step, combining innovation, performance and responsibility to meet both current needs and future expectations.
